The Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment (MONRE) and The Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Unit (NREP) of the Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos (NUoL), cooperated to conduct a series of joint Environmental Education & Awareness (EEA) during the months of June and July 2021 to celebrate Lao National Tree Plantation Day (01 June), Lao National Environment Day / World Environment Day (05 June), and National Wildlife Conservation and Fish Release Day (13 July).  The series of activities included the EEA Short Video (Mobile) contest targeted at the public; Environmental Quiz Contest hosted by Lao Youth Radio and targeted at children, youth and families; tree planting in Saengthong district at the forest conservation zone and around the MoNRE area by the Forestry Faculty and MoNRE/DoE staff, officials and village authorities; and fish release in the Mekong River and at NUoL’s Fish Conservation Zone (Forest Faculty). The package of activities was sought to engage MONRE’s partners ministries and the youth and general public in fun and interactive activities during the COVID-19 lockdown period so as to enhance their awareness, attitudes and interests towards the environment, and highlight simple ways in which they can adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily life, such as 4Rs for waste management (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and tree planting. Altogether, a total of 768 people participated in this series of EEA event activities.  All activities were supported by the German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ) “Protection and Sustainable Use of Forest Ecosystems and Biodiversity (ProFEBII) project.
