EEA Activities to celebrate Lao National Tree Planting Day, Lao National Environment Day / World Environment Day, and National Wildlife and Aquatic Animal Conservation Day_

The Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment (MONRE) and The Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Unit (NREP) of the Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos (NUoL), cooperated to conduct a series of  joint Environmental Education & Awareness (EEA) during the months of June and July 2021 to celebrate Lao National Tree Plantation Day (01 June), Lao National Environment Day / World Environment Day (05 June), and National Wildlife Conservation and Fish Release Day (13 July).  The series of activities included the EEA Short Video (Mobile) contest targeted at the public; Environmental Quiz Contest hosted by Lao Youth Radio and targeted at children, youth and families; tree planting in Saengthong district at the forest conservation zone and around the MoNRE area by the Forestry Faculty and MoNRE/DoE staff, officials and village authorities; and fish release in the Mekong River and at NUoL’s Fish Conservation Zone (Forest Faculty). The package of activities was sought to engage MONRE’s partners ministries and the youth and general public in fun and interactive activities during the COVID-19 lockdown period so as to enhance their awareness, attitudes and interests towards the environment, and highlight simple ways in which they can adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily life, such as 4Rs for waste management (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and tree planting. Altogether, a total of 768 people participated in this series of EEA event activities.  All activities were supported by the German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ) “Protection and Sustainable Use of Forest Ecosystems and Biodiversity (ProFEBII) project.

 

 

 

 

EEA Outreach Bus Tour – Sangthong District

Community and school EEA outreach is one of three key components of the EEA Laos Service Model, which relies on the cooperation of government with civil society organisations. The effectiveness of the EEA Laos alliance approach was highlighted during the period of 22 March – 02 April, 2021, as the DoE, in cooperation with DONRE Saenthong district, conducted an EEA Outreach Bus Tour in 8 Villages/ 9 schools of Saengthong district, Vientiane Capital, all of which are situated adjacent to the boundary of Phou Phanang National Protection Area. The EEA Laos Outreach iconic truck and bus brought engaging environmental edutainment games, activities and methods to the communities and schools with messages of “forest protection and biodiversity conservation”. DoE and EEA Laos Alliance members conducted two sessions per village – a morning session with village authority and community members and an afternoon session with school teachers and students. Altogether, 220 adult community members, 43 teachers and 581 students were engaged.

 

 

EEA Laos Alliance Virtual Dialogue Exchange

On March 3rd 2021, GIZ ProFEBII hosted the EEA Laos Alliance’s first Virtual Online Exchange Dialogue using its MS Teams communication platform.

EEA Lao Alliance Theater Training of Trainer (ToT)

From 9 – 18 March, 2021, the Department of Environment (DoE) organize a 7-day EEA Theater ‘Training of Trainers’ (ToT) workshop in Vientiane Capital for 15 enthusiastic participants from DoE, PONREs Khammouane, Champasak and Luangnamtha, the Rural Development Agency (RDA), Mind Media, Zero Waste Laos and Laos Biodiversity Association (LBA).

EEA Laos Service Model & Proposal Writing Workshop

From 05-08 January 2021; Venue: Don Chan Hotel, Vientiane Capital. The key for long-term success and sustainability of EEA in Laos is the EEA Laos Partnership Service Model and its marketability to donors and other clients to support their work related to environmental sustainable development.
